Education is essential to promote climate action. It helps people understand and address the impacts of the climate crisis, empowering them with the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes needed to act as agents of change. Climate action is one of the key thematic priorities of the Education for Sustainable Development’s global framework for the next 10 years.
We are building a community of “Ecological Heroes” where everyone can be part of it. Group photo of the Chinese and Foreign experts that attended the first Science Literacy meeting on November 7th 2021.
Through its “Green Science Project”, the Andean Road Countries for Science and Technology (ARCST) together with its collaborators Chaoxuan Intelligent Science and Technology Research Institute (CISTRI), the Youth Promoting Global Sustainable Development Network (YPGlobalSDN), Universidad Privada del Valle (UNIVALLE), the Journal of Latin American Sciences and Culture (JLASC), UNESCO Media and Information Literacy (UNESCO MIL) and the Cervantes Institute have been working to make education a more central and visible part of the international response to climate change. The paradigm of the “Green Skills” aims to build a community of “Ecological Heroes”, following the agenda recognized by the international community on the importance of education and training to address climate change. This agenda was proposed under United Nations (UN) Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Paris Agreement, and the associated Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) to educate, empower and engage major groups on actions relating to climate change.
During the inauguration ceremony of the "Green Science Project" on November 7th, the ARCST, CISTRI, and YPGlobalSDN with the rest of the collaborators invited different experts from national and international organizations, research institutions, academia, and industry communities to provide insights on the urgency to build the community of “Ecological Heroes” through the “Green Science Project” and the “Green Skills” educational paradigm.
The “Green Skills” paradigm is the result of a “multidisciplinary synergy” between Chinese and Foreign Experts in climate literacy, scientific literacy, media and information literacy (MIL), technology, education, industry, innovation, research, big data, in coordination with practitioners, advocators, and even the space technology specialist. All those areas were combined to equip the “Ecological Heroes” with knowledge and skills to participate in climate change action.
Media and information literacy (MIL) is an antecedent of science literacy. When MIL is combined with science literacy, both can empower ordinary citizens to contribute to the fight against climate change.
